Introducing Ren Rox - Our Hug A Tree competition winner
Ren Rox is a London-based photographer shooting all-analogue material in a variety of areas, including travel, fashion, music and portraiture as well as personal projects. Using mainly 35mm colour and black and white film, the dreamlike atmosphere is achieved through experimentation via in-camera techniques such as double exposure or a combination of manual methods, ranging from hand painting to destroying original prints through the use of different elements and artefacts.
The featured personal project, Fire of Love, is an ongoing series of destroyed prints depicting the natural world. By playing with fire, the new damaged representation toys with the idea of nostalgia and the duality of past and future, with the pristine original print now partly gone forever and only existing in the photographer's memory or viewer's imagination.
Greyscapes, another ongoing series on the environment, portrays out-of-place vegetation in surroundings very close to the photographer. First shot in black and white film, the prints are later intuitively painted with the aid of flowing water, creating a new surreal layer to the already displaced original settings.
